As many of you know, the 2007 Major League Baseball season is underway and off to an interesting, but fairly predictable, start. The Mets and Dodgers are flying in the National League, the Red Sox are atop the AL east, and Alex Rodriguez is back to tearing the cover off of every pitch he sees. However, one thing that every baseball fan knows is as reliable as Manny Ramirez is lazy, is the early season failure of one particular ballclub hailing from the north side of Chi-town: the loveable losers, the Cubbies.
Mark Prior’s season is over due to a shoulder injury (this time), and as is customary by mid-April, so is the Cub’s. It’s only a matter of time before Kerry Wood has his annual season-ending injury, and some position players are sure to follow suit. There is no team in professional sports quite like the Cubs. They have an extremely loyal fan base despite their never-ending lack of success, and they do spend money on free agents, yet everyone knows their season is over before it starts. Who would have thought that Lou Piniella could REGRET leaving the Devil Rays? Anyone who did, just might be right. Those loyal Wrigley regulars can blame the goat, they can blame Steve Bartman, but for whatever reason, this team hasn’t won a World Series since 1908, and the future doesn’t look promising.
If I were a Cubs fan, I’d either pick another team, give up on baseball all together, or just kill myself so I could go to heaven and try to convince the big guy to lend a helping hand. There’s always 2008, and next year, there will always be 2009! No Cubs were hurt in the making of this article… well, I can’t really be sure.
