ESPN Wants Your Dollars And Soul

May 9, 2007

For the first time ever, ESPN will make their national sales presentation the same week as ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX. There are two reasons for this; since ESPN produces live sporting events they have very few commercials. As production costs rise, more money is necessary. And more money comes from more ads from Fortune 500 companies. Plus, the networks have what ESPN wants; a broad demographic. ESPN cannot survive on Joe Sports Fan. It needs Joe Sports Fan’s wife, kids, and mistress.

This ends up being a blessing and a curse for a true sports fan. We see more games and more coverage, but ESPN will end up promoting their own products, and possibly ignoring the big story. ESPN.com and new technology will improve, but we’ll have to put up with Screaming A. Smith again. Why? Because Joe Six Pack likes seeing a black guy yelling, while Joe Sports Fan is pressing mute to log on to the website.

Remember this when you’re watching “Saturday Night Football” this season. You don’t want to watch USC five times, but your mistress does because she thinks John David Booty is cute.
